Ian Baxter is a sound artist whose work explores generative music, experimental composition, electronics and data-driven sound. His practice is concerned with systems that allow musical outcomes to emerge rather than being completely determined in advance.

He completed a PhD at the University of Sheffield between 2012 and 2020, researching generative music and the sonification of data. His current work includes web-based projects that revisit ideas from his PhD using contemporary browser technologies.

Baxter also builds electronic instruments and modular synthesisers and has worked extensively as a performer and collaborator. He was a founder member of Sheffield antichoir Juxtavoices and is currently a member of the all-guitar ensemble Hearing Things. His work has appeared on record, in concerts, galleries, film and dance.
